Dentists in Hungary’s public health care have decided to restrict their services to emergency procedures on Monday to protest against insufficient government financing, daily Népszava reported. According to the paper, some 700 dentists out of 2,800 practices across the country have joined the action.

In a statement, 23 NGOs signed up to the constitutional complaint organised by the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union and the Hungarian Helsinki Committee civil groups.

The opposition Socialist Party’s candidate for prime minister, László Botka, pledged to double the amount of funding for education, which he called the party’s top priority. Retail sales in Hungary were revised downward to an annual 5.2 percent in June from 5.5 percent in the first reading, the Central Statistical Office said in a second reading of data on Wednesday. Adjusted for calendar year effects, retail sales were up 5.7 percent. Adjusted food sales increased by 3.7 percent, non-food sales jumped 8.3 percent and fuel sales rose by 5.1 percent.
