Parliament on Monday amended a 2011 law on education to reflect the fact that the government will raise teachers’ salaries by only 60% of the originally planned amount from September. The new law abolishes overtime pay and raises the number of mandatory teaching hours from 22 to 26 each week.

Fidesz caucus leader Antal Rogan announced on August 6 that he would initiate the convening of a special session of Parliament for August 26-27 to approve changes related to the salary raise of teachers.

As we know only too well, teachers’ salaries are extremely low in Hungary and teachers haven’t had a raise since the 2008 financial crisis. Given the fairly high inflation rate, at least until recently, the already very low living standards of teachers have further deteriorated in the last five years.
