Two valuable paintings, the “Night Scene with a Chapel and Figures” by Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry, and “Landscape” by József Lampérth Nemes, have disappeared from the warehouse of the MODEM Modern and Contemporary Art Centre in Debrecen.

The fifth missing piece from the Trau (today Trogir) cycle of paintings by 20th century artist Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry has allegedly been found after 113 years, after the artist’s family approached the gallery wanting to put it up for auction.

Police have found four of five paintings stolen from a Buda home on March 15, including a rare work by Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry. The painting, Szerelmesek Találkozása (“Lovers Meeting”) is the most valuable Hungarian painting ever sold in Hungary, changing hands for Ft 230 million in 2006.
