Last week Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižneks submitted the findings of his visit to Hungary over the summer. The 43-page report discusses issues concerning media freedom, the fight against intolerance and discrimination, and human rights of immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees. Torture Prevention Mechanism In Place In Hungary From Jan. 1

A national mechanism for preventing torture and other ill-treatment will be in place from Jan. 1 next year under which staff of the ombudsman’s office will make random spot checks of incarceration facilities, Hungary’s basic rights ombudsman, László Székely said.

The Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner’s report on Hungary also puts forward concerns about the deterioration of the situation as regards racism and intolerance in Hungary, with “anti-Gypsyism” being the most blatant form of intolerance, including violence targeting Roma people and paramilitary marches and patrolling in Roma populated villages.

Six people were taken into custody by police for trespassing at the Fidesz party headquarters after an antigovernment demonstration on Sunday. Police questioned them in connection with vandalising the headquarters of the ruling Fidesz party near Heroes’ Square following a mass demonstration against the government’s new internet tax plans.

Hungarian Govt Supports HUF 700 Cap On Internet Tax

The government supports a proposal put forward by the ruling Fidesz party on capping the tax to be levied on internet traffic at 700 forints or 2.3 euros a month, Economy Minister Mihály Varga said. The tax would not be payable by subscribers but by telecoms, Varga said in parliament on Monday.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in downtown Budapest on Sunday evening to protest against the government’s plan to impose a tax on internet use. Balázs Gulyás, founder of a Hungarian Facebook page “100,000 against the internet tax”, called on the government to withdraw the bill.

On 23 October Hungary marks the 58th anniversary of 1956, and it is is a national holiday. It commemorates the Revolution of 1956, when Hungarians rose up against the Soviet ruled communist system and also the ‘Day of the Republic’, as in 1989 Hungary was declared a republic. On October 22nd and 23rd there are several programs held throughout Hungary.
