The Budapest assembly on Wednesday approved the final proposal on locations selected under the Hungarian capital’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics. Budapest’s mayor, István Tarlós, has failed to discuss proposals concerning renovating the third metro line or handling the capital’s current smog problem, a Socialist representative said. Ildikó Gáll Pelcz, an MEP of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, was elected as one of the European Parliament’s vice presidents in Strasbourg on Wednesday. To be elected an EP vice president, a candidate requires garnering more than half of the votes cast. At the plenary, 680 MEPs cast their votes, 62 of which were invalid.

Parliament approved a bill that reduces the payroll tax from 27% to 22% from next year, and to 20% from 2018. The bill adjusts the healthcare contributions accordingly, reducing them from 27% to 22% for 2017. Economy Minister Mihály Varga submitted the bill to parliament earlier in December.

Hungary’s political parties hailed the outcome of Romania’s recent general election, in which the ethnic Hungarian RMDSZ party garnered over 6% of the votes and will have seats in the Bucharest parliament. The opposition Socialists said they trusted that Romania’s Social Democrats, who won the election, “will cooperate with representatives of the Hungarian community”.
