I have the distinct feeling that something is afoot in Hungary, something the self-satisfied Orbán government is not prepared for. I see the beginnings of a movement that may well overcome the current apathy and resignation of Hungarian society and produce active resistance to the Orbán regime.

Taxi drivers demonstrating against car dispatcher Uber in central Budapest closed a section of Andrássy Avenue and Bajcsy Zsilinszky Road, on Monday. The protesters completely blocked traffic in both directions of the two major routes but reopened one lane in each direction after the Budapest police warned them that a complete blockade was illegal.

In 2015, as in previous years, Tesco customers across Central Europe showed great kindness: 419 tonnes of food have been donated to the food bank collections hosted in the stores in Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. 2015 brought many changes to Hungary’s social welfare system. From March 2015 needy families now receive far less social assistance than before. A number of programs were eliminated. In their place, local governments can offer so-called “settlement assistance”, but who receives how much is now entirely left up to the local governments.

Hungarian laws on refugees fully correspond to international regulations, Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Szijjártó said in a Wednesday statement in response to observations made by Nils Muiznieks, human rights commissioner at the Council of Europe. Muiznieks said Hungarian refugee proceedings are too swift and lack the necessary safeguards.
