FrenAk Company: Lutte of Birds, National Dance Theatre Budapest, 7 March
In Lutte of Birds, a sense of the soaring of birds seeps through the original concept of Lutte, creating a new and exciting dynamic fusion between the themes of struggle and freedom familiar from Frenak.

“We keep others on a leash and pet them as long as they serve us, but the moment they want to move around even a little bit, the moment they want to go, we pull them back,” Frenák describes the violent, power-seeking attitude that appears in Lutte and that has haunted our world for centuries.

While the organic, animalistic movements of the struggle perfectly mirror the struggles of human combat, the occasional bird’s-eye view of the human soul is precisely the attempt to escape from this closed world. The playfulness of the visual world, balancing on the borderline between the grotesque and the serious, makes the performance easy to interpret.

The theme of freedom and confinement, associated with the desire to soar, is one of FrenÁk’s trademarks, and thus the struggles for self-actualisation, autonomy, acceptance, and the pursuit of passion form the basis of the theme.

At the end of the performance, in one of the outstanding scenes with a strong emotional impact, it is as if a mystical being gives the spirit of destiny, the symbol of freedom, the power to fly. It is in these moments that the unity of the piece and the uniqueness of FrenÁk’s world is revealed.
