Hungarian Rhapsodies, Hungarian National Gallery, Shown Now
"The exhibition of about a hundred works by Félicien Rops (1833-1898), a friend of Baudelaire and Mihály Zichy, a great figure of the Belgian symbolism, and a “graphic artist of the modern Decadent movement”, is presented in the framework of the Walloon-Hungarian cultural agreement, through the cooperation between the Hungarian National Gallery and the Félicien Rops Museum of Namur, Belgium.

The first stage of the cooperation was the highly successful exhibition entitled Zichy Mihály - Gustave Doré: Deux "monstres de génie", which opened in 2009 in the museum of Namur, and this will be followed by the presentation of Félicien Rops in Budapest, in the autumn of 2010.

The show, which will select works from the graphic material of the Félicien Rops Museum, as well as from the collections of Belgian private collectors, will introduce Rops’ early pieces inspired by French realism, his most famous Baudelaire illustrations and his erotic drawings.

Rops visited Hungary in 1879, which made such an impression on him that from then on he called himself a man of Hungarian origin. The works he created during and following his Hungarian trip will be presented in a separate section of the exhibition.
