Amnesty Slams Hungary Over Roma
"Hungarian authorities have not done enough to take effective action against attacks on Roma, the human rights body Amnesty International declared in a report released last week.

Nicola Duckworth, program director for Europe and Central Asia, told a Budapest press conference that Roma in Europe are worse off than the majority population in Europe in terms of health, employment and income, and police view them as potential criminals rather than as potential victims.

The Public Administration and Justice Ministry rejected the observations. In a statement, the ministry asserted that Hungarian authorities intend to uncover all crimes committed against Hungarian citizens – Roma or non-Roma.

It added that the state’s ability to protect its citizens had been weakened by poor government of the past few years."
