"Zoltán Kocsis launched his career at the age of 18 by winning Hungarian Radio’s Beethoven competition. Within a few years, he had exploded onto the international stage with invitations to perform in the great musical centres. He was invited by Richter to his festival in France and they gave a concert of duets. He played with the world’s great orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

 He worked with such leading conductors as Claudio Abbado, Christoph von Dohnányi, Lovro von Matačić and Charles Dutoit. In 1983, he jointly founded the Budapest Festival Orchestra with Iván Fischer. Besides playing the piano and conducting he also composes.

He has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with leading contemporary composers such as György Kurtág, who dedicated several new works to Kocsis who also premiered them. His recordings have won the Edison and Gramophon prizes, as well as the Best Instrumental Recording of the Year. In autumn 1997 he became general music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2004, he won the lifetime achievement award at the Midem in Cannes, and in 2005, was awarded his second Kossuth Prize. In 2006, he was given the Bartók-Pásztory award on the 125th anniversary of Bartók’s birth, and in 2007, was bequeathed the title “Ambassador of Hungarian Culture”.
