'Unparalleled Music From The Balkans', Palace Of Arts Budapest, 14 January
"This season of concerts and demonstrations will introduce children to folk music from various regions of the world, and instruments most people have never seen or heard before. The kaval is a very popular folk wind instrument from the Balkans.

It is essentially an empty pipe that makes a sound when air blown into it hits a sharp rim. The kaval, actually a Turkish word, is of Persian origin and arrived on the Balkan Peninsular, then Bulgaria, via the Arab world. The long, cylindrical pipe is made from a single piece of wood that can be taken apart into three pieces.

The rim is on the upper section and is usually made from richly decorated bone or hardwood. The middle section comprises the eight holes used by the kaval player. Four holes are bored into the lower section but these are never fingered, and therefore known as the “devil's holes”.
