Police Raid On Market In Budapest Nets 66 Tons Of Produce
Various authorities mounted a co-ordinated raid at the Budapest Wholesale Market from 10 p.m, Wednesday night to early Thursday morning, impounding 66 tons of fruit and vegetables of unknown origin, Regional Development Ministry state secretary Gyula Budai announced on Thursday.

The authorities were the emergency police and disaster control, the National Tax and Customs Office, the National Labour Protection and Labour Inspectorate General and the National Food Chain Safety Office, Budai said. The impounded produce comprises goods from abroad repackaged to be sold as Hungarian, and will be destroyed.

The authorities have examined substantial irregularities in labour protection and fire safety issues at the warehouses of major companies. Fines worth Ft 18 million have been levied. Two weeks ago 15 tons of fruit and vegetables were confiscated during a similar raid at the wholesale market. Budai said this is the start of a series of checks and controls to stop dealers from operating criminally between legitimate producers.
