Budapest Imposes New Taxi Regulations, Higher Fares
City council yesterday approved new regulations for Budapest taxis, mandating black-and-yellow colours and modern amenities. Taxis should not be more than 10 years old, from September of next year but older taxis can remain in service until July 1, 2015, if they pass annual tests.

City council raised the minimum starting fare from Ft 300 to Ft 450, the distance fee from Ft 204 to Ft 280 per kilometre, and set a waiting rate of Ft 70 per minute, effective from September 1 of this year. These are the current maximum fares.

All taxis will be required to have air conditioning and to be capable of accepting payment by bank card.

Yellow colouring will be required from September for new entrants. Incumbents will have a year after their present annual permits expire to make the change.

Of the 5,277 taxis operating in Budapest 2,394 are older than ten years, according to Budapest Taxi leader Gábor Dióslaki.
