Invitation: Forced Entertainment (UK), Trafó Budapest, 25-26 April
The future: hopes and clichés, optimism and despair, assumptions and reveries – on the borderline of reality and fantasy. We assure ourselves that everything will be just fine and then if things turn upside down after all, then we can't do anything but allow the absurdity of life to amuse us. Thus we encounter the comical-confidential side of Forced Entertainment. The company assumes a playful, occasionally loony, yet brave stance in the face of both possible and non-possible futures.

This is the third appearance of the British Forced Entertainment company at the TRAFÓ.

About the company
Since 1984, the work of Forced Entertainment has broken free from the expectations of theater and audience in a liberating way. Their modus operandi based on cooperation served as the basis of the British avant-garde theater and has brought them international recognition.

Furthermore, the company is unique in that it has been constantly active since its creation 29 years ago. The six founding members of Forced Entertainment established the company after getting their degrees in 1984 and they have been continuously sharing and developing their work ever since then. In the eighties they were considered to be pioneers in the contemporary British art scene with their performances that pushed the boundaries of theater, which they staged on long-distance bus-rides in Sheffield, in bars or theater dressing rooms.

Since their formation they have reacted to contemporary conditions with the means of absurd English humor. Instead of screenplays, they instead work with fragments of text, admitting to using a second-hand coat or scraps of conversations overheard during a night out as the inspiration for their pieces.

For the past 29 years, Forced Entertainment has spent its days in a series of constant, never-ending performances. During their shared workshop activities, they develop and experiment with their pieces together. Their dedication to their work is mirrored by the fact that they only declare a piece complete if all members of the company equally feel they can identify with the performance.
