King Henry VIII is generally not remembered for his qualities as an educated man and a patron of arts although the young ruler–a composer himself–maintained the largest and perhaps most outstanding orchestra of Europe (consisting of 58 members) and assembled the best singers of the country in the choir of the Chapel Royal. The golden age of English Renaissance church music started due to the activities of John Taverner, Christopher Tye and their contemporaries at that time and lasted for two centuries.
At the coronation of Henry VIII the choir of Westminster Abbey provided music. Ever since then the legendary ensemble has preserved the centuries-old tradition of boys’ choirs at English cathedrals.
