Strauss: The Silent Woman (Die schweigsame Frau)comic opera in 3 acts With the original libretto by Stefan Zweig in German with Hungarian subtitles on Saturday, 12 October 2013, 18:00 at Palace of Arts - Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, Budapest

Featuring the Hungarian National Philharmonic and the National Choir
Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis

The next musical stage work by Strauss after Daphne and Capriccio to be performed by the National Philharmonic will be The Silent Woman which has not been staged in Hungarian production, yet. The libretto of the opera premiered in 1935 was written by Stefan Zweig on the basis of Ben Jonson’s play. “The best libretto of a comic opera since The Marriage of Figaro”, Strauss enthused.

The story is centred around Admiral Morosus. His disinherited nephew, the nephew’s wife Aminta and the barber hatch a plot to marry Morosus to Aminta who is said to be a quiet soul. However, as soon as the “marriage” is sealed she becomes a dragon. When the deception is revealed the relieved Morosus is happy to accept his nephew as his heir again.

The plot is a paraphrase of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale dating from a century later. In effect, The Silent Woman is none other than a Don Pasquale parody with a touch of The Barber of Seville and Figaro; the latter particularly for the richness of its ensembles. Translucently orchestrated and extremely melodious, The Silent Woman is brimming with musical excerpts and stylistic parody.
