Free Family Day on Children's Day Hosted by Budapest Festival Orchestra
- 18 May 2026 3:05 PM
Held at the Aquincum Museum and Archaeological Park from 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM, this completely free event offers concerts for all ages, hands-on crafts, dancing, collaborative art projects, and games.
Alongside the entertainment, visitors will have a convenient opportunity to purchase concert tickets and season passes.
Music in Abundance
Over the years, the BFO has developed several specialized programs designed to make classical music engaging, accessible, and enjoyable for children.
Tickets for their signature Cocoa Concerts are notoriously difficult to score during the regular season, but festival-world attendees can experience this iconic format for free during the event.
Another highlight is Music Castle (Zenevár), a narrative-driven concert format that weaves important life lessons into musical stories. While this program frequently tours regional Hungary, opportunities to catch it in Budapest are rare, making this a highly recommended experience.
Additionally, the Instrument Explorer (Hangszerkóstoló) session will allow children to get up close and personal with string, percussion, and wind instruments.
Throughout the day, various chamber concerts will span a wide range of styles, including early music, comforting classical pieces, lively brass performances, traditional folk music, and dynamic percussion showcases.
Games, Crafts, and Books
Organizers have planned a variety of interactive games where children can create and take home tangible keepsakes. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the popular children’s book publisher Pagony will be on-site with a stand full of books and a specially designed Gruffalo game.
The SZETT artisan group will also host creative workshops, guiding children through crafts ranging from pom-pom making to crafting DIY violins.
First-Hand Experiences and Season Previews
In addition to the activities, the festival serves as a practical hub for securing seats for upcoming performances.
One of the major highlights of the BFO's 2026–27 season is the premiere of Iván Fischer’s humorous children’s opera, adapted from the internationally acclaimed book The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
Translated into Hungarian by Ádám Nádasdy, the production will debut for local audiences in October.
Visitors will also be able to purchase tickets for the upcoming season of Cocoa Concerts as well as the orchestra's grand orchestral performances featuring international guest stars.
The detailed program for the Music Fair and Family Day is available on the BFO website, and updates can be tracked via the official Facebook event page.
The event is supported by the Municipality of Budapest.
