Fidesz: Positive Changes Expected For Families In Hungary In 2014
Next year is expected to bring positive changes for families as well as wage and salary earners thanks to an eased tax burden, a drop in household utility bills and a rise in net income, a Fidesz spokesman said. Péter Hoppál told a news conference that the family tax system brought in four years ago had proved capable of strengthening families, and for this reason the government decided to broaden this type of tax benefit.

From Jan. 1, low-income families will also qualify for this kind of tax so that a family with gross income of 110,000 (EUR 368) forints will be able to get that amount in net terms. Altogether 230 billion forints will remain in the pockets of families, he said.

In connection with the reduction in household utility bills, he said that 2014 would be the first year that the cuts of 10-20% made so far would be felt over a full 12 months. He said the government would discuss the possibility of further reductions in January.

Hoppál said introduction of the maternity benefit known as “gyed extra” and the salary hike for more than 150,000 teachers from September would mean a rise in income for many. At the same time, he noted that the recently agreed deal on the minimum wage meant that pay levels would rise for low-earners. The Fidesz spokesman argued that all these factors put together amounted to a major turnaround in economic policy.
