Now On: Light & Shadow: The 1,000-Year History Of Budapest
The new permanent exhibition follows a winding path just as the Danube flows through the city. The blue-green color of the river on the walls of the exhibition guides us through the flow of time, from Roman prehistory and the time of the Hungarian conquest all the way to the present.

We can wander adventurously through the homes of the living and the dead, merchants and tradesmen, or the world of the monasteries or the theaters. The waves of history sometimes raised Buda, Pest and Obuda to the heights, and sometimes plunged them into the depths, sometimes expanding, sometimes shrinking them - always along the banks of the Danube.

The exhibition, which is accompanied by English translations, also features interactive touch-screen displays that visitors can use to view historical photographs of the buildings that once and may still dot their neighborhoods. In addition to the journey along the Danube through Budapest’s history, the exhibition explores themes such as the bath culture, with artifacts from the Rudas Baths, and viticulture, which ended in the 19th century when insects wiped out most of the city’s grapevines, paving the way for Buda to become home to the elegant villas still in evidence today.
