Nine Times More Asylum Seekers This Year In Hungary
Since its foundation in 2000, the Hungarian Immigration Office has never seen so many asylum applications as it did in 2013. There were nine times as many asylum seekers in 2013 as in the year before, said Zuzsanna Végh, General Director of the Immigration and Nationality Office.

The number of asylum applicants has risen from 2157 in 2012, to 18 900 in 2013.

In the year 2013 alone, there were as many asylum seekers registered by the office as in the previous six years altogether.

The reason for the sudden rise is the worsening security situation in the source countries (Syria and Afghanistan) and the difficult financial conditions in Kosovo.
