Hungary’s Former PM Gyurcsany: “Freedom And Democracy Are Very Much Alive In Hungary!”
Ferenc Gyurcsany tells united opposition supporters: "My dear friends, we are gathered here this afternoon to send a message to the rest of Hungary. Freedom and democracy are very much alive in Hungary! We have assembled here today to give strength and restore the faith of every Hungarian in Hungary’s freedom, to show them that Hungary’s freedom is not for sale, to show that we won’t let the Prime Minister take our freedom from us and we won’t let his party rob us of our freedom, because we owe it to ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren!

We are here to show that we will send Orban back to where he belongs, the trash heap of politics and history. We love our homeland, we love being Hungarian, we love to live it and breathe it, our hearts beat for it. We are patriots. We are Hungarians who don’t see ourselves as being any different from others. We Hungarians who understand that the tribulations of the past millenium were the result of our desire to open to the west, not the east! Let Orban head to the east alone if that’s what wants, we will turn to the west! . . . .

We, the citizens of Budapest, Szeged, Papa, Pecs, Hodmezovasarhely have a message for Paris, Berlin, London and Rome: We Hungarians, having overcome hundreds of years of struggles for this purpose, finally arrived in Europe in 1989/90! And we won’t let anybody, including this political swindler and damned crook of a prime minister to take us off this road because this is the road we struggled for so long to be on! Orban must lay down his arms either here Budapest or in Vilagos, because if he doesn’t he will teach him a lesson a lesson that makes it very clear that we neither want nor have another four years for him!

We don’t want another four years of Orban, we want four years of Hungarian democracy! We want to live in a world where people can become anything that their talent and hard work can achieve. We want to live in a world where people living in Budapest and people living in the most distant villages can see that that the promises of ensuring equal opportunity made by the prime minister and government are being honored every citizen irrespective of who they know or where they were born. This prime minister is not that person! This person only represents his own. . . . those who feel entitled to rule power over us! Together we will defeat them all on April 6th!

We have a shared dream, this dream we share is our desire for freedom, dignity, and respect. It is the kind of dream in which Hungarians respect each other, a dream in which one understands the others, a dream that does not allow social exclusion, a dream where selfishness is not allowed, a dream absent of anger and hatred, a dream absent of conceit. We dream of a Hungary where Hungarians can feel at home in his own homeland, where Hungarian can see Europe as their home! This dream is shared here today by together by Socialists, the Liberals, the Greens, and all of the democratic opposition parties!

I want to encourage everyone stand firm in their beliefs, because one day we will be held accountable for the path we chose at the fork in the road. We took the road leading to free Hungary with Attila Mesterhazy and the democratic opposition parties! And we will be victorious in achieving our share goalsgoals! What is a Hungarian worth if he can’t be free? What is the value of a Hungarian life if he is slave in its own country? What are we worth if we are too afraid to fight for what we believe in? What are we worth if give up just because we’ve been taken over by those who have stolen from us, cheated us, and robbed us of what is ours. We want to be more than the sum of our fears and our doubts! We will not only want more, we will be more!

Hand in hand we will encourage each with our bravery and support and shout together ‘Yes! Yes! We will do it! We are with you Hungary! Yes! Yes! We will be victorious and Hungary will be victorious!’ One day when your grandchildren ask you whether you did what your homeland required of you, you can respond ‘Yes! Yes! We did it! We were able enough, brave enough, and strong enough!’
