Hungary’s Socialist Chairman Mesterházy: Left Has Every Chance To Have Majority In EP
There is a real chance for the leftist parties to win the majority of the seats at the European Parliament, Socialist chairman Attila Mesterházy said on Wednesday. He said at a press conference in Ajka, western Hungary, that the European left had supported job creation while parties on the right had been interested in introducing further austerity measures.

He said his party would initiate creating a European Charter of the Elderly that would guarantee safe living conditions for pensioners.

He again underlined his party’s goal to reduce VAT on basic food, to introduce European minimal wages and minimal pensions in Hungary and to ensure full employment of young people under the age of 25.

Speaking at a separate press conference in Budapest, Tibor Szanyi, the Socialist’s list leader for the EP elections said that the Socialist politicians would work towards drawing down EU monies for renovating concrete housing blocks.

He said the first utility price cut had been introduced by the Bajnai government by reducing the VAT on district heating to 5%.
