LUUKKU* Testing The Boundaries Of Art In Budapest
* Luukku (Finnish): window, hatch, trapdoor, lid, but also small apartment, flat. Invited by Finnagora, three of the most acclaimed contemporary Finnish artists, Katja Tukiainen, Jani Leinonen and Teemu Keisteri discuss some of the hottest social issues through their art in a Budapest pop up art space called Luukku. Starting on 16th May, the three artists will participate in this experimental art project in which they question, experiment and even provoke with their art, bringing topics like consumerism, hunger, homelessness and women’s rights in the limelight.

Cooperating with Hungarian artists, as well as art and design students, they will test the boundaries of art using measures ranging from installations to parades and workshops. The events will take place in and around the pop up atelier Luukku, based in Hajós utca 12. (downtown Budapest).

The artists:

Katja Tukiainen is an award-winning and internationally acclaimed painter and comic artist. Her art is easily recognisable for its pink colour and girly characters. In her ironic and humorous works presenting mystical figures, Tukiainen reflects the ideas of how society sees women.

Jani Leinonen mixes traditional fine arts with conceptual art and wild imagination. Many of his works have been largely discussed in public, as he often harshly criticises consumerism, popular culture and multi-national corporations.

Teemu Keisteri does photography, video art and is best known for his drawn Ukkeli-character (free translation: dude). The neon yellow and pink character poses in unique t-shirts, mugs, tote bags, etc. Keisteri re-made some paintings from the golden age of Finnish art featuring the Ukkeli-characters
