AI Hungary Calls On Govt To “Stop Targeting” NGOs
Amnesty International has called on the Hungarian government to “stop targeting” NGOs and civil society groups and ensure that “they can exercise their right to freedom of association and freedom of expression without intimidation,” AI said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the Hungarian NGO Operator Consortium which includes four foundations distributing Norway Grants in Hungary “has recently been subjected to scrutiny and controls that appear to be motivated by the government attempting to target civil society, by alleging that the funds may be used to support certain party political interests.

” AI Hungary director Orsolya Jeney said “no democratic society can exist without civilian control […].” Deputy state secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office Nándor Csepreghy said on May 29 that it was the government’s obligation to check the utilisation of funding that originated from the Norway Fund.
