Budapest General Assembly Approves Metro 3 Revamp
An agreement on the preparation of preliminary plans for revamping Budapest’s metro line 3 was approved by the Budapest City Council general assembly today. The agreement earmarks 1.2 billion forints (EUR 3.9m) from the local council budget for the revamp and the northern extension of the line. The total costs of the construction this year are projected at 361 million forints.

Should the Budapest Transport Centre fail to sign a planning contract by July 8, 635 million forints available in European Union funding for the project will be lost.

The revamp must start in the 2014-2020 budgetary term because the metro line is currently considered as “high risk” in terms of operational and passenger safety, the proposal said.

The Soviet-made metro 3 carriages transport some 520,000-540,000 passengers on average working days. Built in the 1970s and 1980s, the metro line has never been comprehensively upgraded.
