Bogus Police Steal Cash From Foreigners In Central Budapest
Bogus police officers in Budapest have been stopping foreigners on the pretense of checking their documents while actually stealing their money. Two foreign men pretending to be Hungarian police officers stole or attempted to steal from tourists in central Budapest four times on June 26, the police said.

The men stopped tourists in the street, telling them that they were plainclothes police officers who had to check the cash and documents that the tourists were carrying.

After the “examination,” they handed back crumpled bank notes and kept some of the money. They were successful on three occasions but the fourth victim noticed that some money was missing and got it all back.

After police were alerted, investigators from the 2nd district police headquarters arrested the two foreigners shortly before midnight and they have since been put in preliminary detention, the website said.
