Hungarian Hospitals Encouraged To Charge Patients For Treatment
Hungarian hospitals should charge patients for treatment if they do not belong to the respective hospital district, said Gábor Zombori, state secretary responsible for healthcare, at a health conference on Monday.

This possibility already exists but the majority of hospitals do not avail themselves of it. According to Zombori the activity of the Institute for Pharmaceutical and Health Quality and Organizational Development (GYEMSZI) is to be significantly modified, bringing serious changes in the supervision and management of healthcare institutions.

According to the state secretary, patients frequently commuting between hospitals result in a large number of people being treated outside of their district, thus creating inequality in the healthcare system.

If such patients were charged, it would motivate hospitals to make a better use of their existing resources.

At present, HUF 100,000 (USD 416) is the maximum hospitals are permitted to charge for treatment.
