Govt Would Pass EC Fine Over M4 Motorway Construction To Builders
If the European Commission finds Hungary’s M4 motorway construction project in breach of cartel laws and imposes a fine, the government will pass this on to the building companies, an official at the Prime Minister’s Office said. Deputy state secretary Nándor Csepreghy told a conference in Budapest that the ministry was waiting to know if “the suspicions of the EC were confirmed” over the construction of the M4 section between Abony and Fegyvernek in central Hungary.

He added that the government would very much like the motorway upgrade to go ahead. News portal index.hu reported on Wednesday that the European Commission had rejected Hungary’s request for approval of the 110 billion forint (EUR 366.85m) construction project.

According to index.hu’s sources, the rejection came on the ground that the construction of the 30-kilometre motorway section was overpriced, which suggested cartel activity.
