Hungarian director Károly Mészáros’s first cinema film, the absurd romantic comedy Liza, The Fox-Fairy, has won the main prize and the award for the best visual effects at the thirty-fifth Fantasporto international film festival, held in Porto, Portugal. It is the first time in the festival’s 35-year history that the main prize, named Fastasporto Grand Prix, has gone to a Hungarian movie.

The highly-acclaimed prize has been awarded previously to world-famous directors such as David Cronenberg, Luc Besson, Neil Jordan, Danny Boyle, David Fincher, Alejandro González Inárritu and Guillermo del Torro. This year, 27 films were on Fantasporto’s programme, including the international premiere of Mr. Mészáros’s movie, which won not only the Grand Prix but also the prize for the best visual effects.

Liza, The Fox-Fairy, produced by István Major, was shot with the help of HUF 220.36 million in financial support from the Hungarian National Film Fund.
