Catulli Carmina & Carmina Burana @ Margaret Island Open-Air Stage, 10 & 12 July
Performed by the Szeged Contemporary Ballet and the Dohnányi Orchestra of Budafok. Carl Orff, German composer, music teacher, and director is one of the most extraordinary figures of 20th-century music history. Dance and music are inseparable in his pedagogical work, his on-stage creations and his compositions. A large part of his work is complex, multidisciplinary creations, in which rhythm and melody are the main emphasis.

His best-known work is the Carmina Burana, which is part of a three-part composition, the Trionfo di Afrodite Catulli Carmina.

The story evokes the world of archaic myths. We glimpse at the ruins of a civilization filled with rituals with human-like barbarians scraping along battling to remain alive, who are guided by their instincts, struggling to get through what fate has imposed on them.

The interesting thing about the rarely played Catulli Carmina Cantata written for Catullus’ love poems is that the soloists and the choir are accompanied by four pianists and a percussion group.

Tamás Juronics’ monumental choreography of Carmina Burana has been one of the most successful presentations by the Szeged Contemporary Ballet, which dazzled the Open-Air Theatre at Margaret Island audience a few years ago.

The newly introduced Catulli Carmina is presented together with a fresh ballet on the same evening on Margaret Island.

The spectacular contemporary ballet will be supported by excellent choruses, guest artists and accompanied by the several hundred members of the Dohnányi Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Gábor Hollerung.

The special presentation on July 10 will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the composer's birth on his birthday.
