The police will add another 26 high-performance Skodas to apprehend foreign drivers who break the law, he said. The third main element of the network is a socalled Transport safety Automatic Processing and Information System (TAPIS), Halmosi added.

The aim of installing the system is to halve the overall number of road deaths in the EU between 2010 and 2020. Halmosi said road safety improvements since 1990 have gradually reduced road fatality rate. He added, however, that the number of traffic-related deaths in 2014 was 5.9% higher than in the previous year.

Testing on the system will start at the beginning of 2016, the deputy police chief said.

József Óberling, head of the traffic control department at the national police, said the system will help document various traffic violations to detect stolen vehicles or whether a car has compulsory insurance.
