Budapest District Plans “Kitsch Tax” On Homes
The local council of Óbuda, Budapest’s Third District, approved a “kitsch tax” on newly built homes at its meeting on Thursday. The tax is the local government’s instrument for enforcing its architectural rules after the entry into force on January 1 of a new law that waives official approval for the construction of homes up to 300m2, Népszabadság observes.

The annual Ft 500,000 tax will be levied on private homes built after March 31, if they do not adhere to the architectural and cityscape rules set by the district.

The Third District fears that rules on the number of residential units in a building, on green space, car parks and the colours of the houses will not be observed, Népszabadság adds.
