In a press release sent by the local government, Attila Péterffy reminded us that it was 50 years ago that the Vasarely Museum of the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs opened, which is still one of the most important collections of Hungarian and international op-art, and 120 years ago that Victor Vasarely, one of the most influential creators of modern visual art, was born.

This double anniversary is an exceptional opportunity for Pécs to receive international attention as a city of modern art, innovation and visual thinking, he wrote, highlighting that as mayor he supports the JPM initiative, as a result of which events can be realized as a unified city season in the city of Mecsekalja, under the title Vasarely 2026 - Pécs.

The mayor stated that Victor Vasarely's art is still extremely relevant today, as the combination of visuality, mathematics, and creativity is the engine of 21st-century thinking, which can also shape the future of Pécs.

According to him, the Vasarely Memorial Year provides an opportunity for Pécs - while preserving its past and heritage - to emerge as a city of modernity, creativity and technological renewal in Hungary and Europe.

The Vasarely Memorial Year will be implemented under the professional leadership of the JPM, with the involvement of the University of Pécs, the city's cultural institutions and the local creative industry, and the Pécs local government is " ready for all necessary cooperation " in this regard, he wrote.

According to the program outlined in the press release, a temporary thematic Vasarely exhibition will open in the Modern Hungarian Art Gallery in January 2026, the Vasarely Museum, which has been renovated until then, will open on April 9, the artist's birthday, professional days and courses will be held in May, while a temporary exhibition of Claire Vasarely's works will open in the Museum Gallery on May 14.

From the end of May to mid-October, contemporary works of art reflecting on op art will be on display in Pécs under the title Vasarely 120, in June the fiftieth anniversary of the Vasarely Museum will be celebrated with a party, and between the end of June and the end of August, light art works will be presented under the title Vasarely Light.

Between July 2 and 5, Vasarely inspirations will be on display at the tenth Zsolnay Light Festival, while in mid-October, the artist's early works from the capital's Vasarely Museum will be exhibited at the Museum Gallery in Pécs, and there will also be a Vasarely tapestry homage exhibition at the Csontváry Museum.
