Hungarian Christian Dems Hail New Family Support System
The government has made a “huge step forward” through its recent introduction of a system of increased support for families, Péter Harrach, parliamentary group leader of the coruling Christian Democrats, said. Harrach said that ensuring a 10-million forint subsidy and a loan of the same total to families with three children were serving the governmental objectives of increasing support for families and improving demographic trends.

On another subject, Harrach said that decision makers had a “dual responsibility” concerning immigration: while refugees should be assisted, the country’s “self-defence” should also be ensured.

He insisted that the European Union is not able to ensure sufficient protection to its members nor can it control its borders. He urged a “solution outside Europe’s borders” to protect the community.

State secretary Bence Rétvári repeated the government parties’ position that immigration is “an attack against European lifestyles and values”. He insisted that immigrants wishing to settle in Europe should adapt to local norms.

Radical nationalist Jobbik said in reaction that while the ruling parties “seek to win over needy pensioners through offering them a mere 2,000 forints a month”, business people and their families associated with the government will “steal several times that amount each minute” or “enjoy a luxury hotel in Ibiza at many times the average pension”.
