Péter Szijjártó, attending the international donor conference dealing with the Syria humanitarian crisis, said 30-35 million people in Syria and its neighbouring countries live amid conditions that could easily motivate them to set off for Europe, adding this presaged serious consequences.

“It must be clearly acknowledged that the solution to the migrant crisis must be found outside the European Union,” he said.

Syrian refugees should be helped to stay in their immediate neighbourhood so they can return home after the war is over, Szijjártó said. Investments and development projects such as Hungary’s pledge to build and operate a hospital in Syria with start-up government funding of 5.1 million euros are the right way of going about this, he added.

The project will be carried out in cooperation with a Hungarian charity with experience in international aid work, he said.
