Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) was a Hungarian-born French artist, often referred to as the father of op art movement (a style of visual art that uses optical illusion). His work is now open to the public at the French Institute in Budapest until June 18.
Vasarely developed his technique in the pre-computer age and used collages for further inspiration. His impressive work was first exhibited in Budapest in 1969, under the Hungarian communist rule. Abstract art was taboo at the time, but Vasarely’s artistic agenda was a breakthrough that connected art with everyday life.
The exhibition with over 400 unique and duplicated art pieces provides a thorough overview of Vasarely’s work, from his early graphics to the more developed op art and plastic works.
Venue: French Institute Budapest
Address: 1011 Budapest, Fő u. 17.
