Giuseppe Busia, the head of Italy’s data protection authority, praised the new EU data protection law, which he said would help member states keep up with new technologies and meet future challenges.

He said the decree will have to be localised for each member state, a task which will keep national data protection authorities busy over the next few years.

The decree will enter into effect in 2018. EU privacy chief Giovanni Buttarelli said the new regulation was a milestone in European data protection.

He said the fact that the world’s four biggest companies owe their success to the “collection and manipulation” of personal details was another reason to expand data protection rules and keep up with technological developments.

The European Parliament approved the new data protection law in April. The legislation aims to boost security cooperation among member states and strengthen personal privacy.
