Renovation work on the final stretch of the line connecting the town of Szob, on the bank of the River Danube near the border with Slovakia, with the village of Nagybörzsöny in the Börzsöny Hills, was started last year. Szob railway station, from where the trains start their journey into the deep forest with excursioners on board, can be reached with the regular passenger service from Nyugati railway station in central Budapest.

Hikers will be served by lodging facilities established along the line, and the transportation of bicycles will also be possible.

Traffic along the line, which is seen as unique on the continent by enthusiasts, was put to an end in 1992 and tracks were subsequently pulled up, seemingly spelling an end to the romantic railway. Its renovation was made possible by HUF 600million in EU funding granted to the project and contribution from Ipoly Erdő Zrt., the forestry company running the line.
