In his regular Magyar Nemzet column, Albert Gazda calls the left-wing decision to stay away from the referendum a ‘clown’s boycott’.

The MSZP and the Democratic Coalition even agreed on a joint slogan to keep their voters away from the referendum, calling on them to ‘stay at home, stay in Europe’. It does not make a great deal of sense to him therefore that now the MSZP leadership denies having agreed on a joint political move with the breakaway DK.

At any rate, Gazda remarks, no matter what the turnout will be, Fidesz will be the winner. If opposition-leaning voters do cast their votes in sufficient numbers, the referendum will be valid. If they do not, the proportion of ‘no’ votes will be even higher. The contradictory opposition moves on the boycott appeal are simply not worth the effort, Gazda concludes.
