Hungarian Socialists Urge Voters To Boycott Referendum
The Socialist Party will urge voters to abstain from voting in October, party leader Gyula Molnár said. The Socialists will also participate in monitoring the voting process. In connection with this, the Socialist Party has offered to cooperate with the Democratic Coalition, the Dialogue for Hungary, the Lajos Bokros-led Movement for a Modern Hungary and Együtt parties in the form of a technical partnership.

If these parties want to delegate members to the vote-counting and election committees, they can do so through the Socialists, Molnár said, adding that the party plans to spend 10-15 million forints (EUR 32,200- 48,300) on the campaign. János Lázár, the government office chief, told a news conference that whereas the opposition party’s support would be “very great”, its actual strength would rely on the will of the voter, and this is why he had asked the Socialists to reconsider their standpoint calling for a boycott of the referendum.

Lázár added that a vote against the quota did not equal a vote for Fidesz.
