Hungary’s national football team defeated Latvia 2-0 in their World Cup qualification match in Riga Monday evening, chalking up their first win in three games. The goals were scored by Ádám Gyurcsó in the 10th minute and Ádám Szalai in the 77th.

A victory was almost essential to Hungary’s hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, following a draw with the Faeroe Islands and Friday’s home defeat to Switzerland.

“Scoring the first win was extremely important as there was heavy pressure on my team, but the players did the task. In all I am satisfied as the team dominated the game,” manager Bernd Storck told state TV sports channel M4.

Hungary will next meet Andorra on November 13 in Budapest.

Earlier Monday, the Hungarian team met the Dalai Lama, who posed for two pictures with them.
