Museum of Applied Arts Closing For 5 Years
- 10 Aug 2017 12:30 PM
Before the renovation work can begin, the process of relocating the museum’s collection will take one year.
The work itself is scheduled to last for three years, after which the building will remain closed for a fifth year, while the museum moves back in.
The building’s onion dome will be rebuilt, due to its poor condition. The original, weighing 13 tons, will be taken for display at the annual Sziget Festival.
Apart from a comprehensive reconstruction, an underground garage will be built, as well as a new wing based on the original designs of the building’s architect Ödön Lechner, at a cost of Ft 25 billion. The exhibition hall, now 3,000 square metres, will be expanded to 10,000 square metres.
Public procurement proceedings are under way.
