Lauren Gregory is a painter, animator, and music video director. She began by following in her mother’s and grandmother’s footsteps, often painting friends and family in quick one-sitting sessions. Lauren’s work has developed into oil paint stop-motion animations - moving paintings in which thick impasto strokes appear to move before the viewer’s eyes - and music videos for international acts.
Constructed from a maelstrom of vivid colors, Lauren’s portraits capture the likeness and essence of people she encounters. She squeezes big delicious blobs of colorful oil paint onto glass, and by using latex gloves she paints with her fingers, a different color on each finger. The portraits she composes with indelible textures convey a deep sense of intimacy that commemorate the moment of creation. In her words, the works bear testimony to the following: "I see you. I love you. Thank you for spending a little time with me. I’ll always remember this day.”
Lauren Gregory (b. 1983, Tennessee, USA) finished her studies at the University of South Carolina (BFA) and School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA). Her animations have screened at MoMA P.S.1, the New Museum, MOCA Los Angeles, and at museums and film festivals around the world. Since 2010, Lauren has been living in New York City, where she paints and teaches animation at Parsons School of Design.
Gawie Joubert takes the complex connection between humans and nature as his conceptual starting point for his art-making. The artist believes that humans are dependent on nature for psychological and physical well-being. Therefore, he attempts to visually morph figures with greenery to symbolize the interdependence between humans and nature, exploring the way identity is constructed, while expressing his own nostalgia at the same time.
The outcome of this conceptual origo is a range of tranquilly floating figures that appear to be originated from various types of plants. The gracefully rendered imagery owes its character to the medium of charcoal, made from natural resources by Joubert himself. In addition, a range of paper-based plant prints – real plants covered with dry pastel dust – emanate the meditative potential of nature.
Gawie Joubert (b. 1988, South Africa) completed his studies at the North-West University, Potchefstroom in Graphic Design. He has extensively shown his work within group exhibitions. The show at Budapest Art Factory is a preview show of his solo exhibition that will take place at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Cape Town on November 13. Upon his return to Durban, he will start a new body of work based on the inks that he started making during the residency.
