Kerepesi is the oldest Christian cemetery in Budapest, which is still in use today. Many famous Hungarians, politicians, scientists, artists and other dignitaries are buried here. It is considered as one of the most complete National Pantheons in Europe.

In the 1950's the cemetery was closed to the general public and mainly politicians were buried here with big, national ceremonies.

János Kádár, Hungary’s socialist leader for over 30 years, was buried here in 1989. In 1993 József Antall, Prime Minister of the first democratically elected government after the socialist era, was also buried here.

Kerepesi is the final resting place for famous Hungarian politicians like Lajos Kossuth and Ferenc Deák; poets like Endre Ady and Attila József; authors like Zsigmond Móricz and Kálmán Mikszáth; architects like Miklós Ybl and Ödön Lechner and painter Mihály Munkácsy, among many others.

Kerepesi Cemetery covers 56 acres. There is a recommended walking tour for visitors, which includes the most prominent graves. Guided tours are also available.

Getting to Kerepesi Cemetery: Take Subway (M2) to Keleti Railway Station and take the short walk over to Fiumei ut, where the main entrance is.

Kerepesi is also more like a garden, and an open-air museum, with statues, sculptures and monuments giving an insight into Hungary’s recent past.
