Domestic violence is not a private matter but a serious social problem that affects everyone, the mayor of Budapest said on Thursday. "It concerns us all, not only politicians," he said.
The opposition Socialists have proposed the government should set up a fund for the prevention of violence against women and to include the fight against domestic violence as a subject in the national curriculum, the party's parliamentary deputy group leader said on Monday, marking International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
“Péter Magyar has blackmailed and terrorised me,” Judit Varga, the former justice minister, said on Facebook, referring to her ex-husband who on Tuesday published a recording of a conversation between them which he made secretly in their family home.
Officials commemorated the memorial day for the victims of communism on Sunday. Speaking at a ceremony at the House of Terror Museum in Budapest, interior ministry state secretary Bence Rétvári said violence was a fundamental aspect of communism, and “the left always looks the other way when it comes to violence”.
