Hungary To Upgrade Suburban Railway Lines

The government plans to upgrade suburban railway lines HÉV and develop green areas to make Budapest more liveable in coming years, state secretary for Budapest development Balázs Fürjes told Inforádió on Wednesday.

The upgrade of HÉV tracks, infrastructure and vehicle fleet will begin within weeks, Fürjes said, adding that all lines will be improved and lines between Ráckeve and Csepel will be connected to the city’s metro system.

Fürjes called for an overhaul of Budapest’s public transportation infrastructure in the new EU budget period, and for upgrading its cycling network and suburban railway lines. He said that making the downtown area more pedestrian friendly and developing green spaces should continue.
