The Hungarian State Treasury has "unlawfully" withdrawn more than 10 billion forints (EUR 24.8m) from Budapest's accounts, and the municipality has halted payments to some municipality-owned companies to preserve liquidity, Gergely Karácsony, the city's mayor, told a press conference.
The European Commission "has serious concerns" about the rule of law situation in Hungary, EU Commissioner for Democracy Michael McGrath said in Brussels.
The European Commission has referred Hungary to the Court of Justice of the European Union for not complying with EU legislation on migrant smuggling.
