People-Smuggler Caught In Car Chase In Hungary
Police have charged a Syrian people-smuggler who was captured following a car chase along the M5 motorway to Budapest last week.

Police have initiated proceedings against the man, a registered refugee in Germany, for violence against an official, as well as human trafficking.

An Emergency Police patrol pulled over the vehicle heading towards Budapest near Kecskemét on Wednesday, but the driver did not obey the order to stop.

This was followed by what looked like action movie scenes, as he tried to flee in the Austrian-licensed car, sometimes speeding faster than 200km per hour.

He repeatedly tried to knock down police officers who tried to stop him.

Finally, on the outskirts of Budapest he left the motorway and collided with another car at an intersection.

The driver and all five of his Syrian passengers, as well as the Hungarian driver of the other vehicle, were injured.

The 24-year-old suspect was detained by police in hospital.

Police said he had agreed to take the people in his car to Austria illegally.
