To Escape Security a Thief Jumped Into Danube & Was 'Rescued' by Water Police
Budapest water police caught a man who jumped into the Danube after he stole a phone from a hotel shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday night.

The man stole a telephone from the reception desk in a downtown hotel on Apáczai Csere János utca.

When a security guard gave chase, the thief jumped into the Danube and tried to swim across to the other side.

Budapest Police alerted the water police, who reached the man within minutes and pulled him out of the river.

Police officers and the crew of an arriving fire-fighting boat eventually subdued the man following a long struggle.

His body was so cold that paramedics had to be called to attend to him.

The thief was on a police wanted list as he has been sentenced to spend time in prison for another crime.

Police took him into custody after he was given medical attention.
