The grand motet involving orchestra, choir and soloists is an emblematic genre of the French Baroque.

These grandiose reworkings of psalms are not closely tied to the liturgy and were frequently performed in secular venues, for example, in the framework of the famous Concert Spirituel series in Paris, although the greatest honour for composers was to be permitted to perform their works in the Royal Chapel at Versailles.
